  138. The first time you run the Need for SpeedÖ SHIFT demo, the game will automatically detect and set the best video options based on your system hardware. Video settings can be adjusted at any time through the Graphic Preferences menu, in the Options menu.

  144. Need for SpeedÖ SHIFT only officially supports Direct3D for certain 3D accelerator 
  145. devices. While other devices running Direct3D may function in Need for SpeedÖ SHIFT, 
  146. their behavior cannot be predicted and may lead to an unstable PC Environment.

  183. driver does not support DirectSound you may experience choppy or 
  184. stuttering sound, or sound that cuts in and out. Always obtain the
  185. latest device drivers from your sound card manufacturer.

  191. You will not be able to run two versions of the Need for SpeedÖ SHIFT demo using the fast
  192. user switching feature in windows.

  197. It is highly recommended that the latest versions of all device 
  198. drivers (i.e. video and sound card drivers) be obtained and installed.
  199. Please consult your card manufacturer for their newest drivers. Also, 
  200. be aware that video chip manufacturers sometimes provide drivers 
  201. in addition to the card manufacturer.

  203. If you are experiencing issues with an unstable PC environment please 
  204. make sure your Motherboard drivers (AGP, miniport) are up to date. For 
  205. further information please contact your Motherboard manufacturer.

  208. VIDEO & GRAPHICS PROBLEMS

  210. If you are experiencing performance problems on the default graphics 
  211. settings, try lowering the video resolution, or other graphics settings.

  213. This game requires DirectX 9.0c. It is available with the Need for SpeedÖ
  214. SHIFT demo, or through download by going to:

  218. Graphic Cards: Graphical settings and features available in-game are 
  219. dependant on Graphics Card capabilities. Settings not supported by your 
  220. Graphics Card hardware are disabled in the Options Menu to prevent 
  221. adverse effects on the game and your computer.

  224. BACKGROUND PROGRAMS

  227. Avoid running other programs in the background, behind the Need for SpeedÖ SHIFT demo.

  229. Programs that start up automatically can cause the Need for SpeedÖ SHIFT demo
  230. to lose control of the screen, keyboard or mouse, and possibly cause an
  231. unstable PC environment.á We strongly recommend that you close, or suspend 
  232. applications that start up automatically or programs that automatically run 
  233. other applications at specified times, before running the Need for SpeedÖ SHIFT demo.

  281. The Need for SpeedÖ SHIFT demo can be played with many popular gamepads 
  282. and controller devices. If your device is not recognized, or if you'd 
  283. like to modify the configuration the game has pre-assigned to your 
  284. controller, select æControlsÆ through the Options menu. The re-mapping
  285. tools in this menu allow you to change your button configuration for optimal play.

  287. CONTROLLER PROBLEMS

  289. To correct any controller problems, properly configure and calibrate the device 
  290. from the Windows Control Panel.á If the problem continues to persist, 
  291. disconnect the device from your computer before playing the Need for SpeedÖ
  292. SHIFT demo. Always ensure the latest manufacturer drivers are installed for 
  293. your device.

  295. Examples of Controller Problems:
  296. ááááááá - Menu items are automatically scrolled through with no user input.
  297. ááááááá - Your car makes erratic movements that are not intended (such as
  298. ááááááá continually turning).
  299. ááááááá - Certain movements do not occur when the proper direction is pressed.
  300. ááááááá - Sluggish response on slower machines.

  323. To adjust the feeling\sensitivity of the steering in gameplay when 
  324. using the keyboard, enter the Keyboard option in the Windows Control 
  325. Panel (Start - Settings - Control Panel). By adjusting the Repeat 
  326. Delay and Repeat Rate the user can adjust the controls to feel more 
  327. analog or digital depending on their preference.

  329. Some newer keyboards do not allow certain combinations of more than 
  330. two keys to be pressed simultaneously. For example, if you were 
  331. pressing both the up arrow key to accelerate and the left arrow key to 
  332. turn, and you pressed the <C> key to change your view, the view may not 
  333. change. Unfortunately, this problem is due to a limitation of the hardware.

  335. While it is possible to bind game controls to the F12, Print Screen and 
  336. Windows keys, these keys will also retain their original function and can 
  337. interfere with gameplay.

  339. The Windows key is not locked out during gameplay and it will bring 
  340. up the start menu during gameplay.á This may interfere with gameplay.
